Object
Silvicultural interventions to support or accelerate successional processes in both artificial and natural stands.
Objective
To support and/or accelerate the successional processes in place to increase the stability and therefore the ecological-structural efficiency of the forest ecosystem, mainly in stands dominated by holm oak and cork oak with little or no natural regeneration. To promote the gradual transformation of reforestation of Mediterranean conifers and eucalyptus trees into ecologically more stable forests and suitable for the local conditions of the area.
Good Practice Description
The GP provides for three types of intervention to be carried out individually or in combination:
- Selective thinning of conifers in correspondence with the regeneration nuclei and mother plants of native species;
- Sowing of native oak species;
- Selective thinning of the eucalyptus trees aimed at the renaturalisation of the stand.
Territorial Context
This good practice mainly concerned stands with a predominance of Mediterranean sclerophylls (holm oak, cork oak) with the subordinate presence of deciduous broad-leaved trees and Mediterranean conifers, characterised by scarce or absent natural renewal and stands from reforestation of Mediterranean conifers and eucalyptus with ongoing or absent evolutionary dynamics but with potential to trigger evolutionary successional dynamics.
